Get me outtahere!

Franklin does not like his crate.

He has to be lured into it every day and often cries. As I've mentioned before, he really doesn't need to be crated, but Lola does (and she loves her crate). So when we're away for more than an hour or two, he gets incarcerated.

This is what happens when we let them out of their crates. Lola does some stretches. Franklin jumps on the nearest person.

He does a few dance moves to get your attention and let you know that he REALLY didn't like being locked up.

Then he runs out of the room to the stairs to go down to the food and the yard and to freedom.

I think about just giving him the run of the house all the time, but think the cats might like their dog-free time, and even though I know dogs don't think the way people do, it just seems unfair to lock up Lola while little man kicks it on the furniture.

  1. I used to have the same issue. A bigger dog that needed a crate and didnt mind it and a smaller one who felt he was being unjustly persecuted. I ended up putting a baby gate up and keeping my little guy in a bathroom with his dog bed. He was still confined...but no crate neccessary. It workeds great until I phased them both out of crates.

    1. Carrie, that might work! We could give Franklin free range in a part of the house, but not total freedom. Maybe we'll give it a try. Thanks.

  2. Definitely make sure he doesn't have access to Lola if you leave him out, because he may taunt her. Owen and Corby (my parents' dog) are both crated when we visit, and the first one let out immediately runs to the other's crate as if to say "Ha, ha, I'm free and you're not!" Franklin's crate attitude is similar to Owen's. Very dramatic.

  3. Our dogs all crate nicely, but sometimes when we are about to leave and one of them is sitting on the couch nicely I feel guilty and think, what would it hurt to leave one out? But even worse for me to think about is how the two crated would feel about that! So we crate and crate until we are a little more comfortable with things, I guess.

  4. Yeah I understand this... Zoe doesn't particularly like being crated. But I feel like it's only fair for the cats to have some free time to roam around without Zoe chasing them. The baby gate idea is a good one for Mr. Franklin though! :)
