Taking two dogs for long walks requires a lot of stuff. Even taking one dog for a shorter walk takes some gear.
I've discovered that my past as an endurance runner has left me with a bunch of equipment that makes dog walking easier.
I repurpose my running belts. I use my SpiBelt for treats, and tuck pooh bags into the band, and carry a small water bottle in a ziploc bag - the bag serves two purposes: sometimes the bottles leak, so the bag keeps me from getting wet, and I use it as a bowl for the dogs to drink out of.
If I'm going for a longer walk, I'll upgrade to the amphipod belt, and clip on a few bottles of water. Treats in pouch.
And, if it's chillier out, I'll pull out the jacket with the back pockets. I got this years ago, it's windproof and stretchy and really comfortable, and has two big pockets in the back. I loaded it up for yesterday's SociaBulls walk and fit the following comfortably in the pockets: keys, phone, pooh bags, water bottle.
What tricks have you found to make walks easier?
We walk each dog on a Gentle Leader + 6 foot leash. We have a couple of poop bag dispensers that we've clipped to each leash. We bought a "treat bag", but we've found that Ziploc bags are more convenient - they fit in my coat pocket and can be used as an extra poop bag in a pinch. We haven't gone on walks long enough to require water yet, but we sometimes bring a bowl and a bottle of water and leave them in the car so the dogs can drink up before we drive home.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I'm pretty bad about forgetting my keys. Over the weekend, I got locked out in the middle of the night and pissed off some neighbors by shouting for my spouse to let me back in. =/ Do you have any tricks for keys?
we live right in the city, so have to be super vigilant about locking doors when we go out even just around the block, so it's become a hard-wired habit for me.
DeleteMaybe keep your keys right by the leash?
Last summer we got the hands-free leashes that can adjust to fit across your shoulder or around your waist. They also have a metal ring where I clip the poop bag dispenser, or my keys. I also have a little Swiss Army bag that goes over my shoulder and fits treats and a small spray bottle for water...Alfred loves it when I can squirt the water straight into his mouth (almost better than the treats!).
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try the spray bottle!
DeleteWhen I'm walking both dogs on leash I use my Ollie Dog treat bag (actually, that is constantly with me), both dogs wear Easy Walk Harnesses, Skye is attached to my waist leash, and Parker is on a 6ft leash with poop bags attached. Off leash I still have Parker's leash, but I bring a slip lead for Skye and a toy to play fetch if it isn't too busy. Since we drive to all our favorite walking spots, I can leave a water bottle and bowl in the car for after the walk.
ReplyDeleteYou are much more organized than I am, let's just say that! It's good to have a system down.
ReplyDeleteOh...I like this post. We were just going to write one about how we have different bags packed for all the things we do with the pooches, and especially that I have a little pouch for every day walking. Especially for citronella and an ID--given an unfortunate dog park incident a few years ago...
